New Artist Portal and Gallery

With the New Year of 2018, I’ve decided to dedicate more time to getting my art out into the world and out of the studio. To the end, I joined Saatchi Art. It’s fun having a new space in which I can share my work. Primarily, I’m showing my latest work from the last part of 2017.

This mixed media drawing is called “Eyes Wide Open.” It is a diptych of 30″ x 44″ and was created in 2017. The drawing depicts a flower bouquet in a Neo-Cubist Expressive style. The end result is an Organic Abstraction. My goal was to encourage movement and cultivate an abundance of vibrant colors.

Tight Clams

I enjoy the fertile area between abstraction and representation. These two clams, done in chalk pastel, nestle comfortably in that region. They both explore mark-making and through composition you can get lost in the drawing process.

These were done from life, using live clams. Working from life and living creatures is something I truly enjoy. I spent a lot of time exploring the subtle, sandy colors of the shells, at the same time, not letting them get mired in monotony. Touches of red and green helped give a subtle pop.

The client has indicated they like these images. Only time will tell, the final decision.

Spring 2016 in Black & White

So far, I’ve been investigating flora of spring 2016, all in black and white–and loving it! I like exploring linear form and feel connected, as well as inspired by, some of Picasso’s black and white work, as well as Japanese ink and brush painting, and the work of Henri Matisse. I’m hoping next week, to start working in color, as I’ve cut some fresh daffodils from the garden, and they’re begging for yellow!

Calligraphic Art Studies

In this mini-series of work, I was fondly recalling my travels in Japan, being hit by a stunning visual array of communications I admired but couldn’t decipher. Further, I was recalling the ways my colleague at the Art Institute helped my students learn about using a brush and ink to create calligraphy.

These paintings were done with bamboo brush and sumi-ink on an absorbent mixed media paper. The work utilizes intuition, spontaneity and the Law of the Universe in its execution.

Ode to Spring Exhibition

Classic Cinema Annex Gallery

Here’s a sneak peak of my new exhibition, that I just mounted yesterday with the help of my daughter Olivia. I call it “Ode to Spring.” The paintings were done last spring and summer and they are warming to see in this cold weather.

They are exhibited locally. Our movie theatre, of all places, has started exhibiting artist’s works in an annex space.

Funny to see Angry Birds, the movie, advertised in front of the space where my paintings are showing, especially since my studio is called Love Bird Designs.

If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll stop by to see the work, even if it is coming or going to see a film 😉

Wall of Blackberry

Having fun with my magnifying light, “Wall of Blackberry” is a rendition of a gigantic blackberry that is magnified further, exploring shape and form. Will begin to get into more value and volume today and am looking forward to the outcome.

Dandelion Puffs with Allium Flower

You probably wouldn’t know it but those pesky dandelions are revered by herbalists and allium are a more decorative member of the onion family. This piece is very green and a bit muted for my liking, still I’m glad I caught those dandelion puffs before they blew away!
